Il ne va pas bien (ne pas aller bien)
Il n'est pas en forme (ne pas être en forme)
Frog's phrase
Jean-Claude est très pale aujourd'hui. C'est bizarre, je pense qu'il n'est pas dans son assiette.
Translation
Jean-Claude is very pale today. It's strange, I think he's not well today.

You can absolutely say it in reference to yourself. Or at least, I do, and my colleagues don't flinch (they will flinch if I say something wrong, so they're a pretty good gauge). Hehe.

So this podcast becomes not only very helpful to learn some French language, but also French... love :P
In fact in this expression, "assiette" doesn't mean "plate".
It similar to the riding sense, where assiette is the position of the rider, the way he sits on the horse.
Hey, I've got a question for you two - one thing I've always wondered is if you could use this when talking about yourself, ie "je ne suis pas dans mon assiette aujourd'hui"? or is only used when talking about others?
